Equity, Diversity, Inclusion

The Med-I Lab consists of a diverse group of high-school, undergraduate, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. We recognize that everyone comes from different backgrounds and deserves to be treated with respect. We are committed to providing a learning and working environment free from any form of discrimination, sexual and personal harassment. We actively participate in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) training to ensure we can provide equal and fair opportunities to all students who join the Med-I Lab, considering their research interests and future goals.

Equity Liaison: Dr. Jessica Rodgers (she/her)

The role of the equity liaison is to ensure EDI is maintained in the Med-I Lab and to be a first point of contact for any EDI issues. Some of these concerns may include:

  • concerns about how you were treated by any lab member
  • are concerned about your relationship with your supervisor
  • feel you have experienced any form of discrimination, harassment
  • you are feeling uncomfortable working in our lab
  • any other concerns you wish to talk about and keep confidential

We are always looking to improve our EDI resources and are always open to suggestions on how to make our lab more inclusive. Any conversation regarding equity issues between you and the equity liaison is strictly confidential. Should you wish to have more information about equity and human rights at Queen’s, you will get help how to connect to other resources.

Mandatory Training

Upon entry to Med-i Lab, all members are required to complete online and in person workshops on equity, diversity, and inclusion. All members are expected to complete the online workshops “Unconscious Bias” (1) and “Leading, Including, Transforming” (2). Select in person workshops may be required based on their availability. The current list of available workshops include:

1. Unconscious Bias (Online)

The Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) provides a great online workshop about unconscious bias in peer review. This workshop will help you understand what unconscious bias is, how it can affect peer review, and how to mitigate the influence of it. This workshop will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. It can be found on the CIHR website.

2. Leading, Including, Transforming (Online)

This is an online workshop offered through the Human Rights and Equity Offices and the Division of Student Affairs, as part of a broader effort in facilitating conversations to build a more inclusive Queen’s University. This workshop will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. It can be found here.
