School of Computing Celebration of Excellence

Faculty, staff, students and special guests gathered in the Fireside Room at Ban Righ Hall on Friday to celebrate the recent achievements of faculty in the School. First, Drs James Cordy and Patrick Martin who are retiring after many years were recognized for their great service to the School for over 30 years. Second, Dr Gabor Fichtinger was recognized for being named Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Computer-Integrated Surgery. Third, Dr Ahmed Hassan was recognized for his NSERC Steacie Fellowship (for his contributions to the applications of machine learning to the engineering of ultra large-scale systems), his induction into the Royal Society of Canada, and his elevation to the rank of IEEE Fellow. Finally, Dr Robin Dawes was recognized for receiving the Frank Knox award for outstanding commitment to the education of students of Queen’s University through teaching excellence.

Ahmed Hassan Named New member of the Royal Society of Canada

Congratulations to Professor Ahmed Hassan for being elected to the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), the most senior and prestigious academic society in Canada. See posting at https://www.queensu.ca/gazette/stories/royal-round?utm_source=e-queens-gazette_faculty

Ahmed and other elected scholars will be formally inducted as Fellows and Members of the College at the RSC’s Celebration of Excellent and Engagement, Nov. 15-18, in Halifax.

Ahmed Hassan Receives NSERC Steacie Fellowship

On Tuesday, May 1 the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) announced the 2018 recipients of the highly-prestigious NSERC Steacie Fellowship. Dr. Ahmed Hassan (School of Computing) is one of six recipients nationally and he marks the first Steacie Fellow from Queen’s since 2009 (Ingrid Johnsrude – has since moved to Western University ). The highly-competitive award is considered one of the highest honours for researchers in Canada and is granted to enhance the career development of outstanding and highly promising scientists and engineers.

Dr. Hassan demonstrated significant research strengths in system and software engineering and has major industrial collaborations with multi-national corporations such as Blackberry, IMB SAP and AliExpress Alibaba. Dr. Hassan is the Canada Research Chair in Software Analytics and the NSERC/RIM Blackberry Industrial Research Chair in Software Engineering for Ultra Large Scale systems.

Dr. Hassan and Principal and Vice-Chancellor Daniel Woolf will attend the award reception hosted by the Governor General at Rideau Hall on May 1st.

Ahmed Hassan Receives Special Recognition Award for Influential Research

The Queen’s School of Computing is happy to announce that Queen’s School of Computing Professor, Dr. Ahmed Hassan has received a Special Recognition Award for Influential Research.

This prestigious award was presented to Dr. Hassan at the 32nd International Conference on Software Maintenance and Evolution, IEEE’s largest software maintenance conference. The award is in recognition of Dr. Hassan’s pioneering research in the area of mining software repositories.
