PhD candidate at the Queen’s University School of Computing Mohamed Hefny is already demonstrating huge potential on a number of levels, including his studies, research career and his ability to generate funding to benefit his field on the world stage.

Anthony Brohan was selected to present his research at the Rising Stars of Research undergraduate poster competition at UBC in August. Anthony was one of 105 applicants selected from a pool of over 400.
Anthony’s work is titled “Context-Sensitive Acoustic Near-Neutralization in Tongue Twisters”, and was part of a term project for COGS 200. Most of the other projects presented at the conference are undergraduate theses, so it’s really amazing that he was selected to present.

Electronic Arts has just announced EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp, due to release in November 2010. The product guides players through a 60 day workout similar to that performed by NFL Football players before the start of a new season. Players use the standard Wii remote as well as an accelerometer strapped to the leg and a heart-rate monitor. The game will be available for the Wii on November 16, 2010.
One of the developers of this title is recent EQUIS Lab and School of Computing graduate Jeff Yim. Jeff worked on collaborative exergames at the lab, and developed Frozen Treasure Hunter, a game exploring how the use of asymmetric roles can help people of different fitness levels play together.

The paper “Studying the Impact of Social Structures on Software Quality” yesterday received the best paper award at the 18th IEEE International Conference on Program Comprehension (ICPC 2010) in Braga, Portugal. This year is the most competitive year in ICPC’s history, where fewer than 20% of the papers submitted were accepted for presentation.
The authors (Ph.D. candidate Nicolas Bettenburg and Dr. Ahmed E. Hassan, of the Queen’s School of Computing) were presented with a unique and artistic statue for the award, along with the usual award plaques!
The research described in the winning paper is part of Nicolas’ Ph.D. thesis.

For the second time this month, a group of researchers from the Queen’s School of Computing has garnered an award at a conference held in France.
Congratulations to Khalid Elgazzar (Ph.D. candidate, QSC), Mohammed Salah (M.Sc. student, ECE), Abd-Elhamid Taha (Post-Doctoral Fellow, QSC), and Professor Hossam Hassanein (QSC) who received a Best Paper Award for their paper “Comparing Uplink Schedules for LTE” at the Sixth International Wireless & Mobile Computing Conference (IWCMC 2010) held in Caen, France.
